Description Comme Les Abymes, la petite ville guadeloupéenne où elle est née, Laetitia est sensible aux tressaillements de la terre. Et comme son île, qu’elle aime appeler Karukera «l’île aux belles eaux» en arawak, la langue originelle, elle affiche une personnalité solaire et une culture métissée. Laetitia Bourgeois a grandi dans l’amour de la musique. Son père fut le premier batteur du groupe Kassav' et sa mère participera à la création d’une école de musique à Pointe-à-Pître. Laetitia a très tôt été initiée à la scène, aux rythmes caraïbes, à la biguine, au Gros Ka. Quand elle a sept ans, ses parents se séparent et, deux ans plus tard, c’est le départ avec sa sœur pour le Canada. Après un passage par Vancouver, la famille s’établit dans le Manitoba. La petite princesse des îles va apprendre à dompter les grands froids. La musique est toujours présente puisque son beau-père canadien est pianiste classique. Dans la maison résonnent désormais Mozart, Bartok, Messiaen et Miles Davis mais aussi Salif Keita, Mory Kanté, Michael Jackson ou les Beatles. Laeti fait bientôt partie de la chorale du conservatoire local. C’est une évidence: son instrument sera sa voix. Elle se spécialise dans le jazz vocal et le gospel. Pratique également la danse vingt heures par semaine. Elle veut être chanteuse mais tout autant danseuse étoile. À dix-sept ans, elle rejoint l'Université de Knox, près de Chicago. Elle commence à écrire des textes et étudie l'art et le théâtre. Et en 2002, diplôme en poche, elle part pour Paris et ses lumières, elle en rêvait. Tour à tour comédienne, voix off anglaise et demoiselle costumière, elle arpente aussi les planches et apprend au contact de diverses formations de jazz, comme l’avait fait son père avant elle. C’est dans ce parcours qu’elle fera une rencontre déterminante. En 2009, invitée sur Radio Campus, elle se trouve face à un compositeur, François-Marie Dru. En une heure à peine, l’évidence de leur complicité les saisit. Ils ne se quitteront plus. François-Marie est lui aussi métissé de musiques noires et blanches, à l’image des enfants indignes de Chuck Berry, de Ray Charles et B.B. King, qui se nomment Beatles ou Stones, Clapton ou J.J Cale. À eux deux, Laetitia et François-Marie forment FM LAETI. Et après quelques mois à composer leurs premiers titres, le duo s’agrandit, rejoint par Pierre-Marie Dru, frère du compositeur, producteur et fondateur de Pigalle Production. A l'été 2010, ils enregistrent leur premier album avec Yann Arnaud au studio de la Frette. Ils sont entourés de Christophe Minck, Steve Arguelles, Laurian Daire, Ludovic Bruni, Fatoumata Diawara et plusieurs autres musiciens. L'album sera mixé par le talentueux Stéphane Briat. En mai 2011, sort le single Rise in the Sun puis, en octobre, l'album It Will All Come Around. S’ensuit une tournée de deux ans. Fin 2012, Laeti, FM et PM s’enferment dans une maison en Provence et commencent à écrire les premiers titres de ce qui deviendra leur deuxième album, For the Music. ... Laetitia, was born in the Guadeloupean town of Les Abymes. Like her island, which she likes to call Karukera meaning “island of beautiful waters” in Arawak, the original language, she has a solar personality and a diverse culture. Laetitia Bourgeois grew up around the love of music. Her father was the first drummer for the band Kassav’ and her mother participated in the creation of a music school in Point-à-Pître. Early on, Laetitia was initiated to Caribbean rhythms, biguine and Gros Ka (all typical styles from Guadeloupe) and to being near the stage. When she was seven years old, her parents divorced and two years later, she made the big move to Canada with her mother, stepfather and younger sister. After a short period in Vancouver, the family settles in Manitoba. The little Caribbean princess will learn to conquer the cold. Music is always present seeing as her canadian stepfather is a classical pianist. In their home; Mozart, Bartok, Messiaen, Miles Davis but also Salif Keita, Mory Kanté, Michael Jackson and the Beatles can be heard. Eventually Laeti joins the choir at the local conservatory. It’s obvious: her voice is her instrument. She takes vocal jazz classes and also dances twenty hours a week. She dreams of being a singer but also a prima ballerina. At seventeen, she joins Knox College near Chicago, Illinois. She studies art and theatre and also starts to write lyrics. In 2002, diploma in hand, she leaves for Paris and all its lights, a dream of hers. While working as a costume designer, stylist or doing English voice-overs, she also gains stage experience with several jazz ensembles as did her father. It’s on this course that she’ll make a life-changing encounter. In 2009, as a guest on Radio Campus, Laeti meets singer- songwriter, François-Marie Dru. In less than an hour, their complicity becomes obvious. They have worked together ever since. François-Marie is also influenced by the mixture of black and white music and by the unruly children of Chuck Berry, Ray Charles and B.B. King such as the Beatles, the Stones, Clapton or J.J. Cale. Between the two of them, Laetitia and François-Marie create FM LAETI. After a few months of composing their first songs, the duo grows and is joined by Pierre-Marie Dru, brother of the composer and both producer and creator of Pigalle Production. In Summer 2010, they record their first album with Yann Arnaud at Studio de la Frette. They are joined by Christophe Minck , Steve Argüelles, Laurian Daire, Ludovic Bruni, Fatoumata Diawara and many other musicians. The album will be mixed by the talented Stéphane Briat. In May 2011, the single Rise in the Sun comes out, followed by the album It Will All Come Around in October. A two year tour ensues. End of 2012, Laeti, FM and PM retreat to a house in Provence and begin to write the first songs that will become their second album, For the Music.
