Melvins is the experimental, underground side of the heavy, metal-tinged noise rock that reached its peak at the dawn of the 1990s under the name grunge. Formed in Montesano, Washington, in 1983, this sludge metal icon has been led since the early 1980s by guitarist/vocalist Roger "Buzz" Osborne and drummer Dale Crowe. Osborne and drummer Dale Crover, who have been with the band since Gluey Porch Treatments (debut album, 1987) and their most famous album, Houdini (1993). The primary influence of Kurt Cobain and many other rockers-turned-stars, Melvins have earned respect by making their mark in spite of fashions, and through a regular discography rich in collaborations. Comprising two drummers since the arrival of Mike Dillard, the band has also evolved considerably since its beginnings. Dillard, who left in 2015, has not been replaced, while bassist Jared Warren gave way to Steven Shane McDonald on Three Men and a Baby and Basses Loaded, the two albums released in 2016. In 2020, it's Dale Crover's turn to leave his post to Coady Willis on Throbbing Jazz Gristle Funk Hits (2023), followed by Tarantula Heart (2024). The band, backed by Mike Patton on his Ipecac Recordings label, then collaborated with Boris on Twins of Evil (2024), then with Napalm Death for Savage Imperial Death March (2025). 2025 saw the release of Thunderball, featuring the return of Mike Dillard alongside King Buzzo (Buzz Osborne), with contributions from Void Manes and Toshi Kasai.
