Sang Woo Kim, aka Roy Kim, is a South Korean singer and songwriter who rose to fame by winning the TV talent show 'Superstar K' in its fourth season in 2012. Although he was born in South Korea, his early education took place in Canada and the United States, where he graduated from school in 2012, and then accepted a place at Georgetown University in Washington DC. However, before finishing his degree in sociology he returned to his home country to enter, and eventually win 'Superstar K' from a field of two million other contenders.
Following his victory, in 2013 he released his first album, 'Love Love Love', and his number one hit single 'Bom Bom Bom'. This was followed a year later by the single, 'Home', from the album of the same name. His third album, 'The Great Dipper', was released in 2015 and was a departure from his previous folk-inspired style, including more ballads.
In subsequent years Kim took several years out from recording. 2018 saw the release of another ballad in the form of the award-winning single, 'Only Then'. In 2019, Kim was implicated in the Burning Sun scandal, forcing him to return to South Korea from the USA.
