Penny & The Quarters was a short-lived soul group that recorded three demos in 1970 but didn’t achieve any success until the song “You and Me” was finally released over four decades later. The group featured teenagers Nannie ‘Penny’ Coulter (vocals), Jay Robinson (vocals / songwriting), and Nannie’s brothers Preston Coulter, Johnny Coulter, and Donald Coulter on backing vocals. Originally recorded for Clem Price’s Prix Records, the demo recordings remained unreleased until after Price’s death in 2006. Penny & The Quarters would split up in 1971. Purchased from his estate sale, the demo recordings went through several hands before being released by archival record label The Numero Group. The song “You and Me” was included on the label’s compilation Eccentric Soul: The Prix Label (2007). Actor Ryan Gosling heard the song and suggested that it be used in his then-current film Blue Valentine (2010). The song became a cult classic and was issued as a single by The Numero Group in 2011. The song was later featured in several other films and TV commercials and was covered by Durand Jones & The Indications.
