Born on October 17, 1988 in Seoul, South Korea, Dami Im emigrated with her family to Australia aged nine, and was raised in Brisbane. She demonstrated a flair for music at a young age and began studying piano at the Young Conservatorium of Music program at Griffith University in Queensland aged 11. She became a national finalist in the Yamaha Youth Piano competition as well as winning the Nora Baird Scholarship and the Queensland Piano Competition, later completing a Masters of Music Studies degree in contemporary voice at Griffith University. She embarked on a short-lived career as a gospel singer and released her debut album, Dream, in 2010, which was recorded to raise money for the Church, having started her gospel career performing at Christian youth camps. She released a Christmas EP, Snow & Carol, in 2011, and her second EP, Intimacy, in 2012. In 2013, she scored a major breakthrough after winning the fifth season of The X Factor Australia and landing a recording contract with Sony Music Australia. Released in October 2013, Her first post-X Factor single, "Alive," shot to the top of Australia's ARIA Singles Chart and was met by the release of her self-titled second studio album, which also went to Number 1 on the ARIA Albums Chart. She carried the hot streak over to the following year for her third LP, Heart Beats, which was released in October and gave her another Top 10 album, as well as spawning the hits "Super Love" and "Gladiator." In 2016, she upped her game and set her sights on world domination at the Eurovision Song Contest 2016 held in Stockholm, Sweden, representing Australia with the song "Sound of Silence," and placing second. She achieved the highest Eurovision Song Contest score for Australia. Shortly after her triumphant performance, a fourth album, Classic Carpenters, emerged that paid tribute to the titular US duo.
