Hailing from Greenville, South Carolina, American death metal band Nile was formed in 1993 around singer and guitarist Karl Sanders. Fascinated by the mystical works of H. P. Lovecraft and Egyptology, Nile regularly refers to them in its albums, starting with the first, Amongst the Catacombs of Nephren-Ka (1998), released by the Relapse label and followed by Black Seeds of Vengeance (2000), In Their Darkened Shrines (2002) and Annihilation of the Wicked (2005), produced by Neik Kernon. With their raw, technical metal, the band signed with Nuclear Blast and expanded their audience with Ithyphallic (2007), the first album to appear in the Billboard 200 Albums chart. Recorded as a trio with Sanders, guitarist Dallas Toler-Wade and drummer George Kollias, the following album Those Whom the Gods Detest (2009) did the same, reaching No. 160, while sales of its successor At the Gate of Sethu (2012) benefited from the recent European tour, achieving good chart positions on the Old Continent (No. 27 in Germany). Following What Should Not Be Unearthed (2015), recorded in the same configuration, Vile Nilotic Rites (2019) sees the band add the services of guitarist Brian Kingsland, replacing Toler-Wade, and bassist Brad Parris. No less than five years, including the Covid-19 pandemic, separate them from The Underworld Awaits Us All (2024), where Sanders, Kollias and Kingsland are supported by Zach Jeter (guitar) and Dan Vadim Von (bass).
