Cómplices was formed in Spain in 1987 by Teo Cardalda and María Monsonís, both previously associated with Golpes Bajos; the duo released their debut album Manzanas in 1988, featuring the tracks "Dama del río" and "Serás mi cómplice". Their follow‑up, Ángeles desangelados (1989), saw the departure of Tino di Geraldo and Billy Villegas, leaving the pair as a tight duo. In 1990 they issued La danza de la ciudad, from which the single "Es por ti" gained traction across Mexico and Colombia, solidifying their presence in both Spain and Latin America. Subsequent releases included Está llorando el sol (1991) with hits such as "Cuando duermes" and "Ojos gitanos", and the 1993 studio effort Preguntas y flores that highlighted the title track "Preguntas y flores". After a five‑year hiatus, they returned with Cousas de meigas (1999) and the self‑titled Cómplices (2000), the latter incorporating Indian influences. In 2002 Teo Cardalda released A veces as a solo project, while María rejoined for Grandes éxitos en directo (2003), featuring collaborations with Presuntos Implicados and Antonio Vega. The group continued with Hello mundo cruel (2006), Reencarnación (2009), and the commemorative 20 años (2010), which included guest appearances by Rosana, Mónica Naranjo, and El sueño de Morfeo. The duo disbanded after María’s departure in 2001, and Teo Cardalda passed away in 2009.
