Biografia

Lalah Hathaway – born Eulaulah Donyll Hathaway in Chicago, Illinois on December 16, 1968 – is a Grammy-winning soul and jazz singer-songwriter. She has recorded a series of well-received albums and has collaborated with many artists including Take 6, Mary J. Blige, Snoop Dogg, Marcus Miller, Joe Sample, Snarky Puppy, The Winans, and others. Gifted with a voice that allowed her to perfect polyphonic singing, she has become an in-demand session singer as well as a versatile solo artist. The daughter of soul legend Donny Hathaway, Lalah Hathaway was able to step out of her father’s shadow and become a critically successful artist in her own right. Hathaway began her solo recording career in 1987 with the single “Inside the Beat”. Signing with Virgin Records, her self-titled debut album was released in 1990, entering both the Billboard Top 200 and the R&B Albums charts. Her third album, The Song Lives On (1999), was a collaboration with jazz keyboardist Joe Sample. The album, released on the GRP Records label, reached Number 2 on the Billboard Jazz Albums chart. Hathaway signed with Stax Records and released two critically-acclaimed and commercially successful albums: Self Portrait (2008) and Where It All Begins (2011). She won her first Grammy Award in 2014 for “Something”, a collaboration with jazz-soul outfit Snarky Puppy. She has since gone on to win four more Grammy Awards. She set up her own label, Hathaway Entertainment, releasing her album Honestly in 2017, followed by a deluxe edition of the same album the following year.
