Mainly known for being the bass player of New York City-based indie rock darlings Vampire Weekend, Chris Baio (born on October 29, 1984) is an American musician, songwriter, and DJ. A precocious music lover, he developed a passion for indie rock from a very young age, becoming obsessed with the Pixies’ Doolittle and attending his first live show before the age of 10. While attending Columbia University, Baio became the musical director of college radio station WBAR and was involved in a couple of bands before forming Vampire Weekend in 2006 alongside Ezra Koenig, Rostam Batmanglij, and Chris Tomson. Soon enough, the group went on to become one of the most celebrated acts in the indie rock scene with their critically-acclaimed self-titled debut in 2008 and Contra, their 2010 sophomore effort. In between tours, Baio dedicated most of his time to DJing, an interest he had cultivated during his college days. In 2012, he made his official solo debut with the single “Sunburn,” a nostalgia-infused dance track that was quickly followed by the EP Mira in 2013. After relocating to London, Baio released The Names, his proper studio debut, in 2015 and followed up with 2017’s Man of the World, a project largely inspired by the 2016 US election results and UK Brexit.
