Marty Stuart is a traditional American country artist whose songs have been hits for himself and other performers such as Johnny Cash. His style ranges across bluegrass, country rock, honky-tonk and gospel with a flamboyant stage presence. Hits with singer Travis Tritt include 'The Whiskey Ain't Workin'' which reached number two on Billboard's Hot Country Songs Chart in 1992 and earned them a Grammy Award, and 'This One's Gonna Hurt You' which peaked at number seven on the chart and won Vocal Event of the Year at the 1992 CMA Awards. His 18th studio release 'Way Out West' recorded with his band the Fabulous Superlatives went to number two on the Bluegrass Chart and number 18 on the Americana/Folk Albums Chart.
Born in Mississippi, he learned to play the guitar and mandolin as a child and performed with a bluegrass group before he joined Lester Flatt's Nashville Grass as a teenager. He went on to play in bands with Doc Watson and Johnny Cash and made his recording debut in 1979 with 'With a Little Help from My Friends' followed by 'Busy Bee Cafe' in 1982. Other albums since have included 'This One's Gonna Hurt You' (1992) which went to number 12 on Billboard's Top Country Albums Chart, 'Hillbilly Rock' (1990) which reached number 19, 'Tempted' (1991) got to number 20, 'Saturday Night/Sunday Morning' (2014) achieved number 24 and 'Honky Tonkin's What I Do Best' (1996) made number 27.
He has presented the music series 'The Marty Stuart Show' on American cable TV on and off since 2008 and appeared on many other programmes including the Grand Ole Opry. He contributed music to two feature films directed by Billy Bob Thornton - 'All the Pretty Horses' (2000) starring Matt Damon and Penelope Cruz and 'Daddy and Them' (2001) starring Thornton and Laura Dern plus 'Waking Up in Reno' (2002) and 'Caught in the Act' (2004). His album 'Saturday Night/Sunday Morning' went to number ten on Billboard's Top Christian Albums Chart while 'Live at the Ryman' reached number four on the Bluegrass Albums Chart.
