Best remembered for the international hit single "Tell Me," which cracked the Top 40 in multiple countries during 1995, Groove Theory is an R&B duo formed in 1993 by New York City residents Bryce Wilson and Amiel Larrieux. Wilson had previously cut his teeth as a member of the hip-hop group Mantronix, scoring a pair of Top 10 singles in the UK with "Got To Have Your Love" and "Take Your Time." When Mantronix broke up in 1991, he reinvented himself as a producer and signed with Rondor Music, the New York-based publishing house where Larrieux worked as a receptionist. The two began recording demos together before forming Groove Theory. Their self-titled debut was released in October 1995 and went gold within a year's time, thanks to the singles "Tell Me," "Keep Tryin'," and "Baby Luv." Although all three songs were Top 40 hits on the American R&B chart, "Tell Me" became a global success, climbing to Number 5 on the Billboard Hot 100, Number 31 in the UK, Number 14 in New Zealand, and Number 6 in Australia. Larrieux left the group in 1999 and released a number of diverse solo albums, with Lovely Standards climbing to Number 3 on the jazz charts in 2007. Meanwhile, Groove Theory briefly forged ahead with a replacement vocalist, Makeda Davis, before breaking up in 2001. Wilson's reputation as a producer soared during the following decade, resulting in collaborations with Beyoncé, Mary J. Blige, and others. Groove Theory's original lineup reunited in 2010 and released a remix of an earlier single, "Tell Me (My Oh My Drop It Remix) [feat. DjMitz]," in 2016.
