BIOGRAPHY JULIEN MARCHAL 2020
A craftsman of minimalism, Julien Marchal poetizes the silences granted to his suspended notes. From a few dominant skilfully unhooked, the harmonious scores of the Bordeaux pianist speak and invite us to let ourselves be guided in an intensely melancholy and vibrant imagination.
Listening to Julien Marchal is crossing the reliefs of constantly moving music, which is felt as much as it transports us, with its adrenaline, dizziness, pauses and repeats. With his sense of detail, and of matter too, so much can we detect, in his first founding acts, the creaking of the floor, sometimes even the tiny rustling of a mechanism in action.
To compose, Julien Marchal will say it in half-words, it is first of all to listen, to tame the dead times, the suspensions, the better to subjugate them. He manages to invest them in the heart of a tale between glimmer and gravity. In his interpretation, passionately twirling, peaceful as much as passionate, the Bordeaux composer invites feelings to break any ground. We go from delicacy to passion, from urgency to modesty, without ever getting lost.
From a musical awakening from an early age, it was finally on his arrival at the faculty of musicology that he would find his vocation, with the discovery of minimalists. Always in search of an indescribable harmony, the work of Julien Marchal is rich in surprises and rediscovered freedoms. We will definitely recommend his Insight series, initiated in 2017: pieces for piano without a name and declined, so far in four albums, giving free rein to everyone's imagination. His EPs Observations (DimMak - 2018) and Imp. (Whales Records - 2020) complete his introspective panorama.
However, it is thanks to his collaborations that Julien Marchal constantly pushes his limits. The first contact will be with Robot Koch nearly five years ago and renewed soon, including the bewitching "Care". Philanthropic entrepreneur, through the creation of his independent label, Whales Records, which welcomes the work of artists whose sensitivity and friendship he values above all (among them, the Dutch pianist Muriël Bostdorp and the electronic pop combo Mondial Toboggan) , alongside its in-house productions. Among his latest collective arms deeds is his obvious meeting in 2018 with the English prodigy Ed Tullett to form the duo Lissom and compose an eponymous album of infinite sweetness (Whales Records). Since that same year, he has also collaborated with planetary EDM producer Steve Aoki on the last two installments of his Neon Future series. In 2020, it is with the Bordeaux beatmaker, Senbeï, that he now forms the duo SLUMB for an original and daring register, between electronica, post-rock and cinematographic flights (Banzaï Lab - 2020).
By his desire to constantly question his relationship to composition and emotion, Julien Marchal is definitely an artist apart in the landscape of today's music, so much he makes the remarkable bet of reconciling his classical bases a totally innovative sensitivity, to deeply emotional personal readings.
