For the past ten years, the longest time James Walker has spent in any one place has been four months.
A decade spent seeking home, stability and self-understanding are all themes that persist throughout James’ introspective and evocative music.
Unfraid to shine a light on his own shortcomings and red flags, a lot of James’ lyrics are a reflection on his experiences of recovering from two lots of open heart surgery by the age of 21, addiction, codependency and attachment disorders, growing up gay in a turbulent home, and finding a way to recover from all of it. It’s messy, it’s honest, but it’s so human.
This instability is apparent in James’ approach to production, always haunting and ethereal, but permeated with glimpses into his other influences; grungey guitars, distorted synths, affronting harmonies.
In the past ten years, James has performed at over 1,200 concerts with artists like Judy Blank, Matt Simons, The Brazen Youth, Youri Lentjes, a balladeer, and has co-written with Richard Walters, Nathan Nicholson, PollyAnna and many more. He has received ~50m streams across all DSPs to date.
James is relocating to Melbourne, Australia in 2024, to work on new material and to close a particularly heavy chapter in his life.
Before then, he is releasing a body of work in honour of the past few years of change, entitled "I Haven't Really Laughed Like That In Months Now". It's out now via Snafu Records.
