Sukhwinder Singh (born July 18, 1971) is an Indian playback singer whose work has been extensively featured in Bollywood films. Hailing from Amritsar in Punjab, Singh made his official debut with the album Munda Southhall Da in 1995 and then relocated to South India, where he lent his voice to the soundtrack of the 1997 Tamil-language action movie Ratchagan. The following year, he was featured on the soundtrack of Mani Ratnam’s 1998 romantic thriller Dil Se.. with the song “Chaiyya Chaiyya,” a track based on Sufi music and Urdu poetry that topped the charts in India and even made its way to the UK charts. The single’s success helped put Singh on the map as he won Best Male Playback category at both the Filmfare Awards and Star Screen Awards in 1999. In the following years, he rose to international acclaim with “Jai Ho,” which won Best Original Song at the Academy Awards after being featured on Danny Boyle’s 2008 award-winning film Slumdog Millionaire. Subsequently, Singh participated as a contestant on the 7th season of the reality show Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa and earned a Golden Sparrow award in the Best Male Playback category for the song “Kar Har Maidan Fateh,” included in the soundtrack of the 2018 film Sanju.
