An indie pop band with a penchant
for folk lyrics combined with ornate orchestration, Choir of Young Believers is
the brainchild of Danish musician Jannis Noya Makrigiannis. After the
dissolution of his band Lake Placid, Makrigiannis retreated to the island of
Samos in 2006 where he worked on new material. Returning to Copenhagen, he
enlisted the help of several fellow musicians to record the 2007 EP Burn the
Flag, which included “Sharpen Your Knife”, a single that brought
some national attention to the group. Their debut LP, 2008’s This Is for the
White in Your Eyes, was a critical and commercial hit, earning the band Best
New Act at the Danish Music Awards. Rhine Gold followed in 2012. Seeking
a new approach, Makrigiannis reconfigured the band’s line-up and changed his
working methods by collaborating with producer Aske Zidore. Instead of bringing
completed lyrics to the band, jam sessions were held to create new moods and atmospheres.
The result was the 2016 album Grasque.
