Well-versed on a whole host of genres including house, disco, and neo-soul, PinkPantheress is a mysterious DIY artist from London, England. She was born in Bath in 2001 to a Kenyan mother and began writing songs with a friend during her late adolescence, inspired by female artists like Lily Allen and Imogen Heap. Soon enough, she learned her way around music software and started creating sonic collages based on old samples of nu-jungle, pop, and funk. It didn’t take long before her music went viral—her 2021 single “Just a Waste,” a hazy disco track driven forward by a sample of Michael Jackson’s “Off the Wall,” was used in countless videos on social media platforms. This led to a record deal with Parlophone Records, who released her next single, the frantic drum’n’bass reverie “Break It Off.” Her second single spread like wildfire all over the Internet, appearing in over half a million videos. A third single titled “Pain” came out shortly after and reached Number 53 on the UK’s Official Singles Chart. Using her tried-and-true formula of laying sultry vocals on top of groovy samples, a genre she dubbed “new nostalgic,” PinkPantheress followed up with the singles “Passion” and “Attracted to You,” both of which accumulated millions of plays on streaming services. Her first mixtape To Hell with It saw the light on October 21, debuting at Number 20 on the UK Albums Chart and Number 73 on the Billboard 200.
