Sports Team have been scaling the heights of the UK's guitar music scene since 2016 with their relatable, scuffed-up indie-rock anthems that dig into the mundanities and minutiae of British life. Lead vocalist Alex Rice, rhythm guitarist and vocalist Rob Knaggs, lead guitarist Henry Young, drummer Al Greenwood, and keyboardist Ben Mack all met at the University of Cambridge and brought bassist Oli Dewdney on board from the University of Bristol before forming the band and introducing themselves on the Cambridge live circuit, while each member continued to work their day jobs. Sports Team's debut EP Winter Nets dropped in January 2018 on Nice Swan Records, and their sophomore EP Keep Walking! was released in 2019. They began gathering steam on home soil and unleashed their debut album for Island Records, Deep Down Happy, in 2020, consolidating their reputation with a Mercury Prize nomination and a number two footing on the UK chart. Their second album Gulp! arrived in September 2022 and went to number three, rooted in much of the same witty lyricism and scruffy guitarwork as its predecessor.
