Brazilian MPB star Seu Jorge was born Jorge Mário da Silva in Rio de Janeiro in 1970. After a period of being homeless in his late teens da Silva began to discover his musical talent and built himself a successful career as an actor, singer and songwriter. He is credited with having brought about a resurgence of interest in Samba music in his own country.
His rise to international artistic prominence came relatively late in his life when he began singing with the Brazilian band Farofa Carioca prior to launching his solo career; he has now released eight solo albums. His second album to be released outside Brazil was his 2005 album 'Cru' which became his most critically acclaimed work containing a mix of tracks written by various artists including Serge Gainsbourg and Leiber and Stoller.
One of da Silva's more unusual projects was the release of 'The Life Aquatic Studio Sessions', a selection of David Bowie tracks recorded in Portugese language versions for the soundtrack of the American comedy 'The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou'.
