The bilingual rock band Nephew was formed in 1996 in Aarhus, Denmark. Bandmates Simon Kvamm, Jonas Juul Jeppesen, Kristian Riis, and Søren Arnholt had met while studying musicology at Aarhus University, and they quickly developed a modern, danceable brand of rock music that nodded to the dark synthpop of Depeche Mode. Kasper Toustrup replaced Jeppesen in 1998, and Nephew made its studio debut with 2000's Swimming Time. The album peaked at Number 15 in Denmark and was followed four years later by the multi-platinum record USADSB, which turned Nephew into larger-than-life rockstars in their homeland. USADSB topped the Danish charts, as did its best-selling single, "En Wannabe Darth Vader." Nephew's three subsequent albums — 2006's Interkom Kom Ind, 2009's Danmark/Denmark, and 2012's Hjertestarter — all peaked at Number 1, as well, with each release earning platinum status. Meanwhile, Nephew remained at the top of the singles charts with songs like "Hospital" (2007), "007 Is Also Gonna Die" (2009), "The Danish Way to Rock" (2010), and "Gå med dig" (2013), all of which climbed to Number 1. Following a four-year hiatus, the band returned to the road with a new album, 2018's chart-topping Ring—i—Ring, and a revised lineup that included newcomer Marie Højlund. The new addition to the band's roster also resulted in a sonic shift that emphasized Højlund's keyboards and vocal contributions.
