Biografie

Led by songwriter and producer Michael Cleveland, Indeep was a New York-based new wave trio who stormed the charts in the early 80s with their unique blend of early hip-hop, funk and disco grooves. Since its release, their trademark hit “Last Night a D.J. Saved My Life” has been covered and sampled extensively by artists like Mariah Carey, Madonna, and Boards of Canada. Joined by singers Réjane Magloire and Rose Marie Ramsey, Cleveland released Indeep’s official studio debut, Last Night a D.J. Saved My Life, in 1982. Shortly after, the title track became a worldwide hit, peaking at Number 10 on Billboard’s Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs and reaching the Top 5 in countries like Belgium, the Netherlands, and Spain. Following the commercial failure of 1984’s Pajama Party, the group released a compilation entitled The Collection in 1991 before going on an indefinite hiatus. In subsequent years, Cleveland disappeared from the public eye, while Magloire enjoyed moderate success as the vocalist of Belgian techno-house project Technotronic. Cleveland briefly revived Indeep in 1997 for a one-time New Year’s show on French TV, and made a short-lived comeback in 2011 aided by vocalists Beckie Bell and WiX.
