One of the ultimate supergroups, the Traveling Wilburys were a feel-good amalgamation of veteran superstars who produced two outstanding albums in the late 1980s and early 1990s. The idea arose when Roy Orbison, George Harrison and Jeff Lynne had an informal meal together and took root when they got together to record Harrison's Handle With Care as a B-side for his This Is Love single at Bob Dylan's home studio in Malibu. The track turned out so well that they decided to make a full album together and Tom Petty was co-opted to join them when he happened to turn up at the studio at the same time. Each adopted a different Wilbury pseudonym and contributed original material for the album, Traveling Wilburys Volume 1, which proved a big success, including hit singles Handle With Care and End Of The Line. Orbison's death at the end of 1988 brought them to a sudden halt, but the surviving members revived the Wilburys to record Nobody's Child for the Romanian Angel Appeal and in 1990 they recorded a second album, the misleadingly titled Traveling Wilburys Volume 3. It was less successful than its predecessor, but the release of a boxed set in 2007 proved highly popular and brought them back into focus.
