He was born as Arnold Charles Ernest Hintjens in Ostende, Belgium, on May 21, 1949, and made his musical debut with the band Freckleface, whose self-titled debut album was released in 1972. He then released two studio records and one compilation with Tjens Couter before forming TC Matic. Beginning with the 1981 release of the band's self-titled debut, TC Matic enjoyed popularity throughout Europe during the early 1980s, thanks to hit singles like "Putain Putain" and "Elle Adore le Noir." and "Putain Putain. When the band split up following the release of 1985's Ye Ye, he kicked off a solo career with 1986's Arno and continued releasing albums like Charlatan (1988), Ratata (1990), and Tracks From the Story (1992) throughout the final years of the 20th century. He also composed to score to the 1994 film Personne Ne M'aime, topped the French charts with 1995's Les Yeux de Ma Mere, made his acting debut in Jan Bucquoy's 1996 movie Camping Cosmos, and maintained his prolific pace throughout the 2000s and 2010s. 2005's French Bazaar received the Victoire de la Musique Award for "Best Pop-Rock Album," and 2021's Vivre was released during his final months battling with pancreatic cancer.
