Biografie
Katja Ebstein – born Karin Witkiewicz on March 9, 1945, in Girlachsdorf, Germany – is a pop and schlager singer best known for representing her native country three times in the Eurovision Song Contest. The first time, in 1970, she performed the song "Wunder Gibt Es Immer Wieder", which took third place in the contest and climbed to Number 16 on the German singles chart. In 1971, she entered the competition with the song “Diese Welt”, which mirrored the previous year’s placings by finishing in third place on the Eurovision Song Contest and Number 16 on the singles chart. Nine years later, in 1980, she entered the contest for a third and final time with the song “Theatre", which became her most successful entry yet. She came in second place at Eurovision and the single reached Number 11. Katja Ebstein is acknowledged as the most successful performer to have participated in the Eurovision Song Contest without actually winning. And as of 2022, she’s the only singer to have appeared in the Top 3 on three different occasions. Outside of her Eurovision singles, she charted several times with singles such as 1973’s “Der Stern von Mykonos” (Number 4), 1975’s "Es War Einmal Ein Jäger" (Number 4), and 1980’s "Abschied Ist Ein Bißchen Wie Sterben” (Number 10). While she was more successful as a singles artist, she released over 30 albums during her career.
