A singer who can deliver dance
tracks as well as ballads, Olivia O’Brien, born November 26, 1999 in
California, got her big break when she covered a song by the rapper Gnash and
posted it to SoundCloud. Gnash heard it and invited her to sing on his track “I
Hate U, I Love U”. Released as a single in 2016, it went top 10 in a half-dozen
countries, including the United States. That led to O’Brien signing a record
deal with Island who released her debut single, “Trust Issues” later
that year, and three more, including a solo version of “I Hate U, I Love U”,
came out before the end of 2016. 2017 saw the release of more singles that
would appear on her first EP, It’s Not That Deep, which was released in
November of that year. She featured on other artists’ work in 2018, and
released her first album, Was It Even Real?, in 2019. Her planned spot
at the 2020 Coachella Festival did not happen when the COVID-19 pandemic
cancelled the event, but that year she did release the EP Josslyn, which
included four different versions of the title track.
