Last summer solstice I began bicycling alone from CT towards Yellowstone planning to winter in Arizona. 16 months later I returned to CT after 17,000 miles and about 40 episodes of the Celtic and Irish music podcast. Patrick Rieger emailed some photos: "Hi Marc, I wanted to thank you for choosing my message from a few months back to read on the air and share the photo in the show notes in episode 615 of the Irish and Celtic Music Podcast. You are very right, it is wonderful to be more involved in the community and help spread the fun and the joy of Celtic music and other aspects of the culture. And to think it all started 17 years ago when a friend told me about something called renaissance festivals. Celtic Pittsburgh is growing. My wife and son have joined in, as well as a friend. We had tables at the Pittsburgh Irish Festival, and the Ligonier Highland Games.Thanks to those events we have many more subscribers on our Facebook page, and I have learned about other events and other musicians and bands I had not heard of before. I have attached a few photos. The Irish festival was held on the site of an old steel mill in Rankin, Pa, just outside of Pittsburgh. In one photo, Sue Borowski's group, RichPatrick, can be seen performing at the Ligonier Highland Games. On Labor Day weekend, Sue and I were interviewed on the radio! John Golden answered the question, What are you doing while listening?: "Often working BUT usually play the St Paddy’s episode for the family feast." James J. Grefig replied: "Hi Marc, This St. Patrick’s Day I hope I’ll be listening to your podcasts." John Mahony replied to the Celtic Music Magazine: "Hey Marc, Thanks for everything you do to promote Irish and Celtic culture! I usually listen while working on technical stuff. It relaxes me and helps me keep up with newer bands. For St. Patrick’s Day, I will be going to a lower - key party rather than hitting the bars, though I might stop at one or two. I help produce live Irish and Celtic music shows year - round, so I guess the answer is that I’m just doing more of the same!" Edward Birdsall emailed: "Greetings; What am I doing while listening  -  out for daily walk if it is not raining or snowing here in Georgia (1 - 2hours long)  also I listen while donating platelets at the Red Cross which I do on average every 6 weeks which means 2.5 - 3hrs of show for that " Chris Raisin replied to the question, 'What are you doing while listening?': Usually lying in bed with my eyes closed (but not asleep). And for Patrick's Day? "Probably the same as I do for any other day (being 73 years old, single and living alone having lost contact with all my friends due to those infernal lockdowns we had in Melbourne." He's celebrating "By just listening to your great podcasts each time they are issued and remembering back to my days as an energetic Scottish (yes, not Irish) Country Dancer and Highland dancer (not so good at the Highland stuff…LOL). I still have a kilt in my closet (a bit moth eaten now) which I ceased fitting into about 30 years ago. Keep up your great sessions, and I look forward to (I hope) a bonus session. Slainte!"

You see, in my childhood, my 5 siblings and I would get loaded up into our family station wagon every Saturday morning by our mother. She would then proceed to drive us all into Boston for our weekly Irish Step Dancing lessons. Our rides both in and back were spent listening to Boston’s AM’s radio show, ‘The Irish Hour,' and later, ‘The Irish Hit Parade,’ (still on the air to this day!) So, those jigs and reels were ingrained in us in our step dancing, and the other traditional music was from our rides there and home. My mother soon landed us an agent, and we, the six kids, danced all around the Greater Boston area. So, it is no real big surprise that these days, I play in an Irish Music Band with my family. Comprised of myself, my brother, two sisters, and brother - in - law, we perform under the name of ‘FitzBlarney,’ based in Salem, Massachusetts. I’ve attached a coupla’ photos for you, too  -  one of the six of us in our 1970s step - dancing attire, and one from this past St. Patrick’s Day, where FitzBlarney played out at The Witches Brew pub in Salem. Maureen R replied: "St. Patrick's Day is a family day, starting with donuts, then Mass at St. Colman, one of the oldest churches in Cleveland, that for decades had supported a largely Irish immigrant neighborhood. This Mass is the start of the day for the West Side Irish American Club. The dignitaries and club marching units from pipes and drums to tiny pom pom "Bridgies" march into the church with all the regalia of the annual St. Patrick's Day parade. Parts of Mass are read in Irish Gaelic, and familiar Irish songs and readings are shared. The lighting in the church is changed to green uplights and the hall is filled wall to wall with families in Irish sweaters and Irish pride. After Mass and the marching units parade out of the church, everyone heads to downtown Cleveland for the annual St. Patrick's Day parade, one of the largest of its kind in the U.S. and one of the only St. Patrick's Day parades that is always held ON the day. After the parade, families disperse to the many parties all around town. After marching in the parade, I will head off to entertain the crowds with my band, Ballinloch for the last performance of a two week non - stop Irish adventure."

I used to be quite low on St. Pat's but I have finally realized that there are many ways to be happy on this day of Irish celebration.  I live in a very "unusual" area that has no Irish culture at all.  I am a Celtic performer who must travel quite a distance in order to perform at festivals and events but that is impossible during the week since I work a regular job. I used to be sad to see all of my friends on Facebook singing and playing all week long!  I wanted so much to be with them and enjoying the festivities.  Then I realized that I was blessed to spend that time with my family...making an authentic Irish meal (NOT cornbeef and cabbage) and listening to those same friends on a mountain of CD's.  There are, of course, Irish libations involved. : - ) Now I look forward to the day as it was originally meant to be; a chance to share our faith and our heritage with others."

My wife and I listen to your podcast every time we're in the car. And I listen at work. On St. Patty's Day we usually go to a good Irish bar for some Guinness and shepherd's pie and sometimes Bangers and Mash, depending on when we get there. A few years ago we were lucky enough to go to Great Britain, Ireland and Scotland; a great 10 day vacation. Last week (Saturday) was our Dublin, Ohio's St. Patricks Day parade and we always go to the Dublin Irish Festival in August. Our favorite bands are Gaelic Storm, We Banjo 3 and Eileen Ivers. It was a thrill to be there and listen to these amazing musicians. The Dublin Irish Festival is ALWAYS a great time! We were approached by the unofficial spokesperson who pointed at our guitar and fiddle and asked, “Can you really play those?” I answered of course we can, and this is your lucky night!Not only has your party been invaded by musicians, we are an Irish band and this is St Patrick’s Day! We proceeded to unpack our instruments and did a set of singalongs like Charlie on the MTA for the Boston connection.Halfway through the set our wives came into the lobby -my wife grumbled to Pete’s wife, “This party is going to keep us up all night!”Pete’s wife Maureen looked a little closer and exclaimed, “Hey that’s Jim and Pete in the center of it all!”They joined the fray, we had the best gig of the year playing for this group of strangers from the Midwest, wonderful folks who doubtless went home with a great tale and the definition of the work “Craic!”

They were the type of band that I did not expect to hear foul language from. So yes, I messed up. I am terribly sorry for anyone who had to endure the explicit language. As you should know, I do my best to keep episodes of the podcast family - friendly. And as I told Bob, if you ever hear explicit language on the show, please please email me ASAP so that I can correct that error. I rely on your generosity to help me catch these problems. I caught the language problem a day after the show went live and removed the song from the public version of the show. I left it in the Music - Only episode on Patreon, but that song was removed, also from the Celtic Top 20.
