Elmar Oliveira, born June 28, 1950 in Naugatuck, Connecticut, is an American violinist. He began studying the violin at age nine with his brother John and later studied at the Hartt College of Music and the Manhattan School of Music under Ariana Bronne and Raphael Bronstein. Oliveira won first prize ex-aequo with Ilya Grubert at the 1978 Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow. His career highlights include a Grammy nomination for his 1990 recording of "Barber Concerto" with Leonard Slatkin and the Saint Louis Symphony, and the 1997 release of Rautavaara Violin Concerto with the Helsinki Philharmonic, which won a Cannes Classical Award. He is a Distinguished Artist in Residence at the Lynn University Conservatory of Music in Boca Raton, Florida, and has received honorary doctorates from Manhattan School of Music and Binghamton University, as well as Portugal’s highest civilian honor, the Order of Santiago.
