In Beyond Walls – Istanbul, pianist and composer Büşra Kayıkçı wanders through place and time to craft her own impressions of its landmarks, with sound, sight and sentiment all as her muse. These five spellbinding pieces open a dialogue with buildings of her home city, from the original Ottoman Bank to the world-famous Grand Bazaar, inviting the architecture to speak to her through more than merely its visual characteristics, but through its history, its functional value, and the setting and atmosphere that it kindles.
Inspired by her unique interdisciplinary approach as a musician and a trained architect, the original compositions blend acoustic piano with layers of electronic textures, including field recordings made on location, in and outside of the buildings, which capture authentic and evocative sounds unique to each place, sometimes serving as abstract background elements, at other times rhythmic pulses and beats.
Büşra Kayıkçı will present the Beyond Walls – Istanbul at her upcoming concerts, alongside the pieces from her new scorebook Eskizler.
