Steam were an American pop-rock music group formed in 1969. The band's notable members included Gary DeCarlo, Dale Frashuer, and Paul Leka. Steam achieved their breakthrough with the single "Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye", which shot to the top of the charts in the US for two weeks in December 1969. The song was written by studio musicians Gary DeCarlo (under the name Garrett Scott), Dale Frashuer, and Paul Leka, and produced by the latter at Mercury Records studios in New York City. Despite the single's success, there was no actual band named Steam at the time of its release; a touring group was quickly assembled to support the hit. The self-titled debut album followed in 1970, featuring four additional singles released that year. "I've Gotta Make You Love Me" reached number 46 on the US Billboard chart and number 44 in Canada. Steam continued as a live touring band for over three decades until their split in 2006. "Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye" went on to become a cultural phenomenon. Gary DeCarlo passed away on 28 June 2017 after being diagnosed with lung cancer.
