The NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchester, formerly known as the NDR Symphony Orchestra, are a symphony orchestra based in Hamburg, Germany. Founded in 1945 by Hans Schmidt-Isserstedt, their initial setup comprised of musicians from the Grosses Rundfunkorchester des Reichssenders Hamburg The orchestra's first concert featured conductor Schmidt-Isserstedt and violinist Yehudi Menuhin. In 2016, following the opening of the Elbphilharmonie concert hall in Hamburg, the ensemble adopted its current name. Known for their classical repertoire from Beethoven to Bruckner, as well as contemporary works, the orchestra have collaborated with notable composers such as Sofia Goubaïdoulina and Matthias Pintscher. The NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchester have been directed by several prominent conductors including Moshe Atzmon, Klaus Tennstedt, Günter Wand, and Alan Gilbert.
