David Allan Coe (born September 6 ,1939 in Akron, Ohio) was an American singer, songwriter, and guitarist. After years in reform schools and prisons, he began busking on Nashville streets and later signed with Columbia Records. His debut Penitentiary Blues (1970) showcased a blues‑influenced sound that shifted toward country, leading to the outlaw‑style The Mysterious Rhinestone Cowboy (1974). The single "You Never Even Called Me by My Name" (1975) reached number 8 on the Billboard country chart. Subsequent releases-Longhaired Redneck (1976), Rides Again (1977), and Castles in the Sand (1983)-included the track "The Ride", which reached number 4 on Billboard and topped the Cashbox country chart. His 1984 single "Mona Lisa Lost Her Smile" reached number 2 on U.S. country charts. David Allan Coe wrote songs later recorded by Tanya Tucker and Johnny Paycheck, reinforcing his influence. He continued touring until his death in Dallas, Texas, on April 29, 2026 at age 86.
