Biography

Celebrated as the "Queen of Dancehall," Lady Saw is a Jamaican reggae artist whose career includes a string of acclaimed solo albums, as well as collaborations with No Doubt, Shaggy, and Nicki Minaj. She was born as "Marion Hall" in Galina, Saint Mary, Jamaica, on July 12, 1969. She adopted the stage name "Lady Saw" in 1987 and made her debut with singles like "If Him Left" and "Find A Good Man," the second of which topped the Jamaican charts in 1993. Her debut album, Lover Girl, was released the following year. Give Me The Reason followed in 1996 and introduced the sexually-explicit lyrics that would come to characterize Lady Saw's unique style. Her popularity soon spread beyond Jamaica, with 1997's Passion peaking at Number 8 on America's Top Reggae Albums chart. 99 Ways climbed to Number 10 on the same chart in 1998, while 1999's "Smile" — a gold-certified duet with Vitamin C — became a Top 40 pop single in Iceland, Canada, New Zealand, and the United States. Lady Saw then teamed up with No Doubt for the Grammy-winning, triple-platinum single "Underneath It All," which appeared on No Doubt's 2001 record, Rock Steady, and climbed to Number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100. Lady Saw returned her focus to her solo career in 2004's Strip Tease and remained prominent in the reggae scene throughout the following decade, cracking the Top 10 of the Billboard reggae chart with 2007's Walk Out and 2014's Alter Ego. The following year, she was baptized as a Christian and began performing gospel music under the name "Minister Marion Hall." 2016's When God Speaks introduced this sound, followed by 2018's His Grace.
