Mohit Chauhan, an Indian
pop star and award-winning playback singer for films, was born March 11, 1966
in Nahan, Himachal Pradesh. Although he studied Geology in college, he dreamed
of an acting career. However it was in the music industry where he first gained
celebrity as one of the singers in, and the main songwriter for, the group Silk
Route. Hits like “Dooba Dooba” made the group superstars, but they
disbanded after just two albums. In 2002 Bollywood directors took note of Mohit
Chauhan’s talent and began hiring him to sing in their films. Often working
with some of the biggest names in Bollywood, including celebrated composer A.R.
Rahman, his voice graced numerous films every year. Starting in 2009 he
regularly won film industry and critics awards for his vocal prowess on soundtracks.
Albums like 2009’s Fitfoor allowed him an outlet for more personal work,
and maintained his status as one of the elite pop stars of his generation. His
numerous well-known singles include 2010’s “Masakali”, from the movie Delhi-6
and “Kun Faya Kun” from the 2011 film Rockstar. In 2021, “Rang
Lageya”, a duet with Rochak Kohli scored him yest another top 40 hit.
