Part of the 1980s scene designed to be more soulful, sophisticated and smooth than the average chart fodder, Hue and Cry created swooning, blue-eyed soul for the more discerning pop fans of the time. Scottish brothers Pat and Greg Kane grew up listening to Motown, jazz and funk sounds and landed a deal with Virgin Records thanks to the popularity of their independently released first single "Here Comes Everybody". Alongside the likes of Wet Wet Wet, Curiosity Killed the Cat and Johnny Hates Jazz, their synthesized pop took over from the more flamboyant New Romantic craze and their Top 10 single "Labour of Love" became their big signature tune and one of the anthems of the day. Their debut album Seduced and Abandoned (1987) was followed by more hits in "Looking for Linda", "Violently Your Words Hit Me" and "Ordinary Angel" and they reached Number 10 with second album Remote (1988). The duo went on to experiment with Latin, big band and even drum and bass on later records Stars Crash Down (1991), Showtime! (1994) and Next Move (1999) before returning to the showbiz world on TV show Hit Me Baby One More Time in 2005. Issued in 2024, the double album 40, exclusively sold on their website, is a collection of studio and live outtakes.
