The band moved to London in 1968, where they quickly established themselves as one of the essential bands on the progressive scene, of which Pink Floyd was the standard-bearer at the time. Roger Chapman's husky, strangled vibrato and his hyperviolent, borderline sadistic stage presence took the audience by surprise. Family's first albums (Music In A Doll's House, 1968; Family Entertainment, 1969) developed a highly original, aggressive sound, with interesting melodies ("The Weaver's Answer") and harmonic combinations. Instability due to constant personnel changes compromised the band's career, and they disbanded in 1974.
