Carolina Chocolate Drops is an American traditional music group based in Durham, North Carolina. The three founding members met at the Black Banjo Gathering festival in November 2005. Rhiannon Giddens, Justin Robinson and Dom Flemons reappropriate in their own way the repertoire of the black string bands of the 1920s and 1930s, bringing it up to date. After Dona Got a Ramblin Mind (2006), the band released two more tribute albums before signing with Nonesuch Record, a label renowned for its folk and alternative rock. Thanks to this signing, Carolina Chocolate Drops worked with Joe Henry, famous producer and country singer, on Genuine Negro Jig. The 2010 album won the Grammy Award for Best Traditional Folk Album. For Leaving Eden (2012), the band's line-up is slightly reworked following the departure of Justin Robinson. The sound became less rootsy and more contemporary.
