Acclaimed as one of the finest string quartets in the world, Takács Quartet formed in Budapest, Hungary in 1975 when violinists Gábor Takács-Nagy and Károly Schranz, violist Gábor Ormai and cellist András Fejér were students at the Budapest Music Academy. The current line-up comprises Schranz and Fejér with violinist Edward Dusinberre and violist Geraldine Walther. Noted for their innovative approach to classic material, their 2017-18 season included four annual performances at Wigmore Hall in London and appearances in Copenhagen, Vienna, Luxembourg and Rotterdam plus the Rheingau Festival in Frankfurt, Germany and the Edinburgh Festival in Scotland. Their most recent recording, 'Dvorák's Viola Quintet, Op. 97 (with Lawrence Power) and String Quartet, Op. 105' came out in September 2017.
The original foursome earned attention quickly in major competitions in Europe and performed around the world with a repertoire that included the complete string quartets of Bartók, Beethoven, Brahms and Schubert plus folk music and modern works. They have been based since 1983 at the University of Colorado and added players as one or two of the original group, such as Takács-Nagy, left or retired. Their eclectic tastes are reflected in performances of Philip Roth's 'Everyman' with Meryl Streep and Philip Seymour Hoffman and collaborations with the Colorado Shakespeare Festival.
