Biography

Lyric-coloratura mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato was born in Prairie Village, Kansas on February 13, 1969. She studied vocal music education in Kansas at the Wichita State University before continuing her formal musical education at the Academy of Vocal Arts in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. From there, she was accepted onto the Apprentice Singer program at Santa Fe Opera in New Mexico where she was honored as one of the outstanding apprentices of that season. Her professional career began in 1998 when she sang with several regional opera companies in the United States including the Houston Grand Opera and the Santa Fe Opera. For the next few years, she embarked upon a punishing schedule of appearances performing a wide variety of roles eventually breaking out onto the international opera circuit with appearances throughout Europe. She has now performed over 40 key operatic roles and sung with some of the world's leading companies establishing herself as an internationally renowned performer and recording artist. Her performances have earned her critical acclaim around the globe, and she is considered to be one of the world's leading operatic lyric-coloratura mezzo sopranos. In addition to her many live performances at the opera, Joyce DiDonato has recorded recitals in very different repertoires, including The Deepest Desire (2006), ¡Pasión! (2007), Handel: Furore (2008), Rossini: Colbran, the Muse (2009), Drama Queens (2012), Stella di Napoli (2014), Joyce & Tony - Live at Wigmore Hall with Antonio Pappano on piano ( 2015), In War & Peace: Harmony Through Music (2016), Songplay (2019) and Eden (2022). Among the many awards on her list, Joyce DiDonato has won three Grammy Awards (2012, 2016 and 2019), the Handel Prize (2018), and the Laurence Olivier Award (2018).
