A longtime figure in the UK's indie rock community, Bobby Gillespie drummed for The Jesus and Mary Chain during the mid-1980s before rising to greater heights as the frontman of Primal Scream. He was born in Glasgow, Scotland, on June 22, 1962, and formed Primal Scream in 1982. Although the group began playing live shows that same year, progress was initially slow, with Bobby Gillespie splitting his time between Primal Scream and The Jesus and Mary Chain. He joined the latter group in 1984 and play drums on the band's breakthrough album Psychocandy one year later. By 1986, Bolly Gillespie had left The Jesus and Mary Chain's lineup and devoted his full energy to Primal Scream, whose career blossomed with the release of 1991's platinum-certified, Mercury Music Prize-winning record Screamadelica. "Loaded" became the band's first hit single, and Primal Scream released six consecutive Top 10 studio albums throughout the following 17 years, landing radio hits in both the UK and Scotland with "Movin' on Up" (1992), "Rocks" (1994), "Kowalski" (1997), and "Country Girl" (2006). As the band's frontman and chief songwriter, Bobby Gillespie helped steer the sound of mainstream indie rock for the better part of two decades before launching his solo career with Utopian Ashes. Released in 2021, the album found him collaborating with French songwriter (and Savages frontwoman) Jehnny Beth.
