Biography

Country music singer and songwriter Ruston Kelly was born in Georgetown, South Carolina on July 31, 1988. Kelly grew up in Wyoming, Ohio and became interested in music at a young age. By the time he was in high school, he had already written an album’s worth of original material. In 2013, he signed a publishing deal with BMG Nashville. The first of his songs to be recorded by another artist was “Nashville Without You”, which appeared on Tim McGraw’s Two Lanes of Freedom album. He also had his songs recorded by the Josh Abbott Band, Rob Baird, Hayes Carli, and Lucie Silvas. Kelly struggled with drug addiction, almost overdosing in December, 2015. He began to pursue a life of sobriety the following year, meeting fellow country music artist Kacey Musgraves in March, 2016. Kelly and Musgraves began dating and were married in October 2017. Signing with Razor and Tie Records, Kelly released his first EP, Halloween, in 2017, which was produced by Mike Mogis (Bright Eyes). He then signed with Rounder Records and released the critically acclaimed 2018 album Dying Star, which featured the singles “Jericho”, “Mockingbird”, “Faceplant”, and “Son of a Highway Daughter”. Kelly released the eight-song EP, Dirty Emo, Vol. 1, in 2019. In August 2020, Kelly released his second full-length album Shape & Destroy, just a month after filing for divorce from Musgraves. The album featured the singles “Rubber”, “Pressure”, and “Radio Cloud”.
