Biography

Formed by house music production duo Masters of Work – Little Louie Vega (born in The Bronx on June 12, 1965) and Kenny ‘Dope’ Gonzalez (born in Brooklyn, New York on July 6, 1970) - Nuyorican Soul was a short-lived musical concept that combined Latin music, jazz and house. Vega - nephew of Fania All Stars singer Hector Lavoe – and Gonzalez formed Masters of Work in 1990 and after years of success, created Nuyorican Soul in order to combine their house sound with their passion for Latin music, soul, jazz, and disco. Using musicians from the Salsoul Orchestra as well as Roy Ayers, George Benson, Tito Puente, Vincent Montana, Jr. and singer Jocelyn Brown, they recorded their self-titled debut album, released in 1997. The album included the hit singles "Runaway" (featuring India), “You Can Do It” (featuring George Benson) and “It's Alright I Feel It!” (featuring Jocelyn Brown). The Nuyorican Soul album was a great success, hitting the charts in the US, UK, and Europe. The album’s tracks were remixed by top DJs including 4hero, Roni Size, Armand Van Helden, DJ Jazzy Jeff, Mousse T. and Mood II Swing, some of which were included on the 1998 compilation The Remixes.
