Biography

The Canadian songwriter Scott Helman was born in Toronto, Ontario, on October 1, 1995. Raised by Jewish parents who supported his music career, he received a guitar at 10 years old and quickly began writing songs, even signing a development deal with Warner Music's Canadian office by the age of 15. His debut single, "Bungalow," followed in 2014, as did the dual EPs Songs for Friends and Augusta. Those early releases were popular in Canada, where "Bungalow" hit number 31 on the Canadian Hot 100 and went platinum. Helman received nominations for "Breakthrough Artist of the Year" and "Pop Album of the Year" at the Juno Awards in 2016. A full-length album, Hôtel de Ville, followed in 2017 and peaked at number 45 on the Canadian Albums Chart. Once again, Helman received a pair of nominations at the Juno Awards, with Hôtel de Ville receiving a nod for "Pop Album of the Year" and Helman himself being nominated for "Songwriter of the Year." Additionally, he received gold certifications "Kinda Complicated" and "Ripple Effect," as well as a platinum plaque for "PDA." Those hits were followed by the title track of Hang Ups, his 2018 EP. "Hang Ups" reached number 2 on the Canada AC chart and number 51 on the Canadian Hot 100, with both the single and its accompanying video receiving Juno Award nominations. Two years later, Helman released his second album, 2020's Nonsuch Park (SA), which featured the gold-certified, Juno-nominated radio hit "Wait No More." Although Helman failed to reach the Canadian charts with several of his follow-up releases, he regained his spot in the mainstream with 2023's "Every Time (Drive By)," which reached number 26 on Canada's Top 30 Adult Contemporary Songs chart that summer.
