Biography

Sammi Cheng Sau-man (born on August 19, 1972 in Hong Kong), known as Sammi Cheng, is Hong Kong singer and actress. Awarded third place in the New Talent Singing Awards, Cheng was offered a recording contract while she was still in school. Releasing three studio albums Sammi, Holiday and Never Too Late before she graduated, it was her duet with Hong Kong singer Andy Hui, “Do You Really Have Me in Your Heart?” that saw her gain considerable popularity, winning the Jade Solid Gold Top 10 Award in 1993. Undergoing a dramatic personal style transformation shortly after, Cho released smash hit “Ding Dong”, from the 1994 album Big Revenge, which garnered considerable controversy over its westernisation and R-rated samples. During this time, Cheng developed her acting career, appearing in the TVB series A Life of His Own, followed by 1992 film Best of the Best. In 1996, Cheng signed with Warner Music, releasing Worth It, her first Mandarin-language album, which retained its number 1 position on the Taiwan IFPI charts for six weeks, and exponentially increasing her international appeal. By 2000, Cheng had starred in several box office hits, receiving nominations for several Hong Kong Film Awards both as an actress and singer, however after extensive tours and the release of four studio albums in two years including Wonder Woman (2002) and La La La (2004), Cheng took an extended hiatus, reappearing with comeback albums Love is Love in 2013 and Fabulous in 2016 and embarking on several world tours and private concerts, as well as recording her 9th Mandarin-language album “裸 (Nude)”, released on Valentines Day, 2017. Over the course of her career, Cheng has released 130 singles and 80 studio albums and has performed at Hong Kong’s Coliseum a record-breaking 102 times, also retaining the record for highest album sales in the Hong Kong Cantopop industry.
