Seriously injured in a road accident on her bicycle in New Jersey in 2003 which confined her to bed for a year, Melody Gardot - a fashion student at the time - endured a painstaking rehabilitation, part of which was using music as therapy to get her brain functioning properly again. The long-term result was that she learned to play guitar and started writing songs which eventually found their way on to the internet and she started getting gigs in the Philadelphia area. Gardot's sensuous blues and jazzy material and intimate vocal style found an affinity with club audiences, resulting in her 2006 debut album Worrisome Heart, including her signature song Quiet Fire. Set around piano arrangements and samba rhythms, She worked with famed producer Larry Klein on her hugely popular second album My One And Only Thrill in 2009, including the singles Who Will Comfort Me and Baby, I'm A Fool, and a cover of Somewhere Over The Rainbow in tribute to one of her heroines, Judy Garland. Gardot is a committed Buddhist and has a strict macrobiotic diet.
