With a style that seamlessly combines trap, R&B, and gospel, American rapper and singer Morae Ruffin (September 9, 1992), aka MoRRay, jumped to fame in 2020 with his single “Quicksand.” Hailing from Fayetteville, North Carolina, he grew up listening to R&B and gospel music, and by the time he was 4, he was already singing in his local church choir. During his teenage years, MoRRay relocated to Lebanon, Pennsylvania, where he became acquainted with the rap collective SGS. After a couple of stints in juvenile detention and some time in prison, he began recording his own material while working a series of construction jobs in order to support his family, releasing his first track in 2014. A few years later, MoRRay decided to fully devote himself to music after losing his job at a call center in 2020. “Quicksand,” his first video, garnered the attention of media manager Moe Shalizi, who quickly signed him to Pick Six Records and re-released the track as a single. The track reached Number 65 on the Billboard Hot 100 and racked up streams by the millions, earning MoRRay a feature on Billboard’s Emerging Artists Spotlight and co-signs by Rick Ross and DaBaby. Street Sermons, MoRRay’s first mixtape, saw the light in April 2021 and peaked at Number 41 on the Billboard 200. That year, he also popped up on J. Cole’s “My Life,” also featuring 21 Savage.
