Dschinghis Khan are a German Euro pop/disco band who were originally formed to represent Germany in the Eurovision Song Contest with their single 'Dschinghis Khan' in 1979, where they finished fourth. They released their self-titled debut album in the same year which features the Eurovision hit.
Despite having formed in Germany, the band's members hail from countries across Europe and even South Africa. In 1986, three members of the band, who formed as Dschinghis Khan Family, took another run at the Eurovision Song Contest in 1986 with the song 'Wir gehör'n zusammen', which took them to second place of the national qualifying competition.
The band's lineup has shifted somewhat over the years with the band disbanding in the mid-1980s before making their comeback later in 2005. Louis Potgieter sadly died in 1993 and Steve Bender later died in 2006. The current incarnation includes original members Henriette Strobel, Edina Pop and Wolfgang Heichel with several new additions who have joined since their reformation, however the band is currently split into two with members divided into separate groups, both named Dschinghis Khan and performing as different bands.
Collectively, the band's last album, '7 Leben', was released in 2007.
