When film star Jared Leto ('Fight Club', 'American Psycho', 'Girl Interrupted') first announced that he was starting a band with his brother Shannon, critics were immediately cynical, but it didn't take long for even the most grizzled metallers to admit they were converted. Refusing to play venues that used Jared's name to promote the gig, the band went in search of credibility as they released their self-titled debut album in 2002. Theatrical and anthemic, the hard-rocking emo crowd were impressed and their follow-up album 'A Beautiful Lie' (2005) broke them across the US and into Europe. Support slots with Linkin Park, a place on the Warped Tour and festival slots at Download and Roskilde further charmed hard rock fans but a legal row with record company EMI who sued the band for attempting to sign with another label delayed further material.
After a year of legal difficulties, the case was settled and they released their third album 'This War' (2009) which featured 2,000 different album covers, each a photograph submitted by a different fan drawing on inspiration of prog rock, synths and the glam pop ambition of The Killers to create a huge, melodic, gothic cacophony. The album reached number 18 in the Billboard 200 and gave them the singles 'Kings and Queens' and 'This Is War' which both achieved the top spot on the US Alternative Songs Chart. After performing 300 shows off the back of their third album, and making it into the Guinness World Records for achieving this, they took a break from touring and spent time in the studio recording their fourth album. 'Love, Lust, Faith and Dreams' was released in 2013, with the first copy of the lead single, 'Up in the Air', being placed aboard the Dragon spacecraft on SpaceX CRS-2, sending the first copy of the song into space allowing it to have its premiere on the International Space Station. Their fifth album 'America' was released in 2018, preceded by the singles 'Walk On Water' and 'Dangerous Night'.
