Erika de Casier was born in Lisbon, Portugal on 21 March 1990 to a Belgian mother and Cape Verdean father. After moving to Copenhagen around the age of eight, she experienced racism at school and later went to spend a year living with a host family in the US. Once back in Denmark, she turned her focus to music, joining the school choir and trying out production. She cut her teeth in the R&B duo Saint Cava alongside Andreas Vasegaard, with the pair making some noise on a national level, performing at Roskilde Festival in 2015 and putting out a few releases before ultimately disbanding. Nevertheless, she had piqued her interest in music and duly set her sights on a solo career. In 2017, she rolled out her debut single "What U Wanna Do?" and the "Intimate" follow-up came in 2018. She introduced her bewitching brand of esoteric, nostalgia-tinged R&B on 2019 studio LP Essentials, released via Independent Jeep Records and creating an ardent following, which has grown stronger with subsequent releases. She kept two feet firmly in the 1990s and naughties again for her hyped-up second album Sensational, issued on the iconic 4AD label. Meanwhile, she has taken on other endeavours outside of her solo work, such as the "E-Motions" collaborative single with Mura Masa from the latter's 2022 studio album, Demon Time. In 2023, she co-wrote four out of six songs on NewJeans’ global smash Get Up EP, which went to number one on the US Billboard 200 in 2023. She stuck with 4AD for her third studio album Still, released in 2024 and teased by the singles "Lucky," a catchy breakbeat-driven blast of dance-pop and "Ice," which featured electronic hip-hop duo They Hate Change.
