¥$ is a hip hop ‘supergroup’ duo comprised of rapper / producer Kanye West and singer / rapper Ty Dolla Sign. Kanye West began his career in the late 1990s and had become an international superstar in 2004 with the release of his debut album The College Dropout. His prolific career as a producer, songwriter, and artist made him one of the most well-known names in hip hop music. Ty Dolla Sign began his career the same year that Kanye released his debut album, although he didn’t achieve significant success until almost a decade later. The two artists first collaborated in 2014 when Ty Dolla Sign worked on Kanye’s album The Life of Pablo. Although there had been talk of them working on a project together, nothing came to fruition at the time. They collaborated again on Kanye’s 2018 album ye and recorded tracks for his next album, but that release was ultimately scrapped. More speculation of a full-length collaboration between the two artists continued to surface over the next several years, but nothing surfaced until the release of Vultures 1, which was credited to ¥$, in February 2024. Recorded in Italy and Saudi Arabia, the album featured guest appearances from Chris Brown, Freddie Gibbs, Travis Scott, YG, Lil Durk and many others. Vultures 1 was an international success and reached the top of the charts in the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and Norway while coming in at number 2 in Sweden and the UK. Of the album’s three singles, “Carnival” (with Rich the Kid featuring Playboi Carti) was a massive international hit. Six months after the release of Vultures 1, ¥$ released their follow-up album, Vultures 2. Recorded before and after their debut album, this release contained guest appearances from some of the same collaborators as well as Future, Kodak Black, Young Thug, and more. Although it didn’t receive glowing reviews, the album managed to chart at number 2 on the Billboard 200 and climbed to the top of the Canadian Albums chart. It also made the Top 10 in the UK, Australia, Sweden, New Zealand, and Norway.
