The show, created by Bernard Slade, followed the musical adventures of a fictional family band, loosely inspired by the real-life Cowsills. The band was led by Shirley Partridge (Shirley Jones) and her children, including Keith (David Cassidy), Laurie (Susan Dey), and Danny (Danny Bonaduce).

The series was centered around the family's journey from recording their first pop song in their garage to achieving widespread fame. David Cassidy, who played Keith, quickly became a teen idol, contributing his own vocals to the show's recordings after initially being slated to lip-sync.
