The Wiener Singverein is a symphonic concert choir established in 1858 as the choral wing of Vienna's Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde. Initially led by Johann von Herbeck and later Johannes Brahms, the ensemble has premiered foundational works, including Brahms' Ein deutsches Requiem (1867), Bruckner’s Te Deum (1886), and Mahler’s Symphony No. 8 (1910). While earlier choral activities included the 1824 debut of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9, the modern choir gained global recognition through its intensive partnership with Herbert von Karajan from 1947 to 1989. This collaboration yielded landmark recordings of works like Berlioz’s "La damnation de Faust" and Britten’s "War Requiem."
